Trezor.io/start® | Getting started — Ledger Support®
Welcome — this guide walks you through getting started with a Trezor® hardware wallet using the official Trezor setup flow at Trezor.io/start®. If you’re coming from a Ledger® device or exploring options, these step-by-step instructions and security tips will help you set up your Trezor safely and transfer control of your crypto assets when you’re ready.
Quick overview
- Unbox your Trezor and verify the tamper-evident seal.
- Visit Trezor.io/start® on the computer you’ll use for setup.
- Install any required helper software (Trezor Suite / Bridge) per the site instructions.
- Initialize the device: create a PIN, generate and securely store your recovery seed.
- (Optional) Transfer crypto from other wallets/devices — follow coin-specific instructions.
- Keep your recovery seed offline and follow best-practices for long-term security.
Before you begin — essentials
- Use a clean, malware-free computer you control.
- Never share your recovery seed or PIN with anyone or enter them into a website.
- Keep the recovery seed written on paper (or metal backup) stored securely offline.
- Do not accept help that requires exposing your seed or private keys.
Step-by-step setup (recommended)
1. Verify packaging and device authenticity
- Confirm the tamper seal is intact and the device is the model you ordered. If anything is suspicious, contact the vendor.
2. Open Trezor.io/start®
- On your computer, open a browser and go to Trezor.io/start®. Follow the on-screen prompts. (The official site will guide firmware installation and software downloads.)
3. Install Trezor Suite or Bridge if prompted
- Trezor may ask you to install Trezor Suite (desktop app) or Trezor Bridge (browser helper). Install only from the official Trezor site.
4. Connect and initialize the device
- Connect the Trezor to your computer via USB. The setup wizard will prompt you to create a new wallet or restore from an existing recovery seed.
5. Choose a PIN
- Create a PIN you can remember but that is not easily guessable. The device will show a PIN entry interface — always enter the PIN directly on the device when requested.
6. Write down your recovery seed
- The device will generate a recovery seed (typically 12–24 words). Write these words down exactly and store them offline in a secure place. Consider a metal backup for disaster resistance.
7. Confirm the seed on the device
- As part of the setup you’ll confirm certain words to ensure you recorded them correctly.
8. Install firmware updates (if required)
- Allow the device to update firmware if prompted. Firmware from the official site ensures security fixes and improvements.
9. Open Trezor Suite and add accounts
- Use Trezor Suite (or the web interface if directed) to add cryptocurrency accounts (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.) and view addresses.
Transferring assets from a Ledger® device (high-level)
- If you’re moving funds from a Ledger® device, first ensure you have the Ledger recovery seed securely backed up. You’ll need to send assets from the Ledger-managed addresses to the receiving addresses you control with the Trezor.
- For each coin, create a receiving address with the Trezor and send funds from Ledger using the Ledger Live app or the coin’s wallet interface. Confirm transactions on both devices’ screens.
- Important: never import a Ledger recovery seed into another device by typing it into an online form. The secure process is on-device transfer between addresses you control.
Security best practices
- Never type your recovery seed into a computer, phone, or browser.
- Keep at least two secure backups of your recovery seed in physically separate, locked locations.
- Use a passphrase (optional advanced feature) only if you understand how it works — a lost passphrase cannot be recovered.
- Beware phishing: only use official Trezor domains and double-check URLs.
- Regularly update firmware and the Trezor Suite app when official updates are released.
Troubleshooting (common questions)
Q — The site asks for a firmware update but the device won’t update.
A — Ensure a stable USB connection, use a recommended browser, and install Trezor Bridge or Suite. If problems persist, check the device model and contact official support.
Q — Can I restore my Ledger seed on Trezor?
A — Trezor supports restoring from many types of hardware wallet seeds if they are standard BIP39/SLIP39 formats. Restoring should be done only on the device itself following the prompts — but transferring funds between devices by sending to Trezor-generated addresses is generally safer and recommended.
Q — Should I use a passphrase?
A — Passphrases add security but also complexity and risk (if forgotten you may lose funds). Only use them if you understand the tradeoffs and store the passphrase securely.
